Youth Life Coaching is something I have always enjoyed. When I worked with
at risk youth and their families, I met with hundreds of desperate parents who
had placed their child into in-patient treatment programs desperately hoping to
help their child find a happier more emotionally balanced life. The most
amazing part about the program I worked with was it’s design to strengthen every member of the family unit. It did this by providing education to parents and youth that encouraged each person to work on their own personal growth.
Working with kids gave me a unique insight into the many struggles our
children face today. Some of those challenges they face include a world decline in family
values, anxiety, self-harm, raging hormones, gender confusion, peer pressure,
bullying, drug and alcohol abuse, peer suicide and suicidal thoughts of their
own.
My heart goes out to the young people of today. There are so many variables
that make it difficult to navigate the path from the innocence of childhood to
the self-sufficiency of an adult world. That is why I have put so much effort
into building tools and techniques that will help families and youth stand
strong in this ever-changing world.
I know from parenting my own nine children and 84 foster children through a
rollercoaster of emotions, that parenting without a stable support system can
be hard for parent and child alike. I have also noticed that some teenagers
need an outside influence to help them work through their own emotions.
If you are having a hard time with a struggling teen, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It takes a lot of courage to realize that there are resources that can help with an emotional teen that you haven’t tried yet.
Wouldn’t it be nice if each one of our children came with emotional resilience manuals that helped us to know exactly what to do through each stage of our child’s life?
Well, I haven’t written a manual that works for every child, but I have worked a great deal with teens and their parents. In Teen Life Coaching, we work together to customize a plan that will give you and your child the support that you need.
Here are just a few of the items that coaching addresses:
- Understanding how to create an emotionally safe environment
- Establishing mutual respect
- Learning and implementing clear communication skills
- Aligning family values
- Defining family rules and clarifying personal and family boundaries
- Taking accountability for choices made without judgement or blame.
